Latvia opens honorary consulate in Mogilev

Latvia opens honorary consulate in Mogilev

MOGILEV, 12 December (BelTA) – The Honorary Consulate of the Latvian Republic on Mogilev and Mogilev Oblast opened in the oblast center on 12 December. Aleksei Savchuk was appointed honorary consul, BelTA has learned.

Attending the ceremony was Counsellor, Deputy Ambassador of Latvia to Belarus Dace Rutka, Director of the Economic Relations, Trade and Development Cooperation Directorate of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Juris Stalmeistars, Mogilev Oblast Governor Vladimir Domanevsky, and Mogilev Mayor Vladimir Tsumarev.

“The opening of the honorary consulate of Latvia in Mogilev is a milestone event, and we hope that it will make a special contribution to the further development of our relations. Latvia is an important strategic partner for Belarus and a transit corridor for Belarusian products to third countries,” Vladimir Domanevsky said.

According to the governor, Belarus-Latvia interregional cooperation has been increasingly vibrant in the recent years, including steadily growing foreign trade. In January-October 2018, mutual trade amounted to about $40 million, more than 30% up year-on-year. “I am confident that the opening of the honorary consulate will give a new impetus to the development of our cooperation. We see that there is a lot of mutual interest and many points of contact. These are mutually beneficial relations,” said Vladimir Domanevsky.

Juris Stalmeistars stressed that Latvia is a reliable partner of Belarus in the area of transport and logistics. Many Belarusian goods go to Europe via Latvian ports. “The honorary consulate in Mogilev means a new level of cooperation,” he said.

Dace Rutka presented Aleksei Savchuk with a special certificate of the honorary consul, wished every success and expressed confidence in the dynamic development of interregional relations in all sectors.

According to Aleksei Savchuk, he intends to continue and expand the already existing mutually beneficial cooperation in the economic sector. The focus will be on food production, science and education. “We plan to organize a business forum in Mogilev in the first half of 2019 with the participation of leading businessmen from Latvia and Mogilev Oblast,” said the honorary consul.

Special attention will be also paid to the development of interregional cooperation. “Although Latvia and Belarus are neighbors, businessmen still have little knowledge about investment opportunities. Therefore, our task is to organize visits for people who are ready to invest in the economies of both countries so that they could see the existing potential and build up a future strategy of joint cooperation,” said Aleksei Savchuk.
