Kochanova: Belarus values high-level political dialogue with Armenia

MINSK, 5 February (BelTA) – Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova met with Armenian Ambassador to Belarus Armen Ghevondyan to discuss the issues of inter-parliamentary, trade, economic and humanitarian cooperation, BelTA learned from the press service of the Council of the Republic.
“We value the high level of political dialogue that has developed between our countries. The Belarusian-Armenian relations rely on the friendship of our peoples, so cooperation in trade, economic and humanitarian areas has been dynamic,” Natalya Kochanova said.
The most successful example of cooperation is the inter-parliamentary partnership between Belarus and Armenia, she stressed. An inter-parliamentary commission has been established and is working successfully. It has held 12 meetings already. In 2019, the commission met in Yerevan. This year it will convene for a meeting in Belarus.
The head of the Council of the Republic added that the two countries have a great potential to strengthen trade and economic cooperation. “We would like to see a number of new projects in trade and economic cooperation that would be beneficial to Belarus and Armenia. For example, we can cooperate in the supply of urban passenger transport. You know that we have good enterprises. Transport vehicles produced by them are in demand not only in Belarus but also abroad. I know that the agreements have already been signed with Belarusian companies to replace elevators in Yerevan,” she noted.
In general, Belarus is ready for further cooperation with Armenia in all avenues. “We have a lot of common ground in our work. I am convinced that we have not yet utilized the whole potential. I want to assure that the MPs, members of the Council of the Republic will do everything to ensure that our good relations continue growing stronger and develop in the future,” Natalya Kochanova said.
According to Ambassador Armen Ghevondyan, the Armenian embassy will promote inter-parliamentary dialogue both bilaterally and on the international arena. The ambassador emphasized the prospects for Belarus-Armenia cooperation in science and technology. “This sector is of mutual interest, including its high-tech manufacturing and the digital agenda,” the diplomat said.
The ambassador told the media that the inter-parliamentary commission has been discussing a wide range of issues, including parliamentary assistance to bolster economic ties between Belarus and Armenia. “These are traditional avenues of cooperation and matters of mutual interest: urban transport, agriculture, farming and mining machinery, elevators. Parliamentary support is important to give a momentum to the work on all fronts,” he stressed. The ambassador said that cooperation in IT is highly promising, too.
“Both Armenia and Belarus place a great emphasis on the human capital. Cooperation between our companies, exchange of experience and best practices as part of the China-Belarus industrial park Great Stone, the Hi-Tech Park can significantly contribute to bilateral trade,” Ambassador Armen Ghevondyan said.
In January-November 2019, the trade between the two countries totaled $63.7 million, up 39% year-on-year. The exports made up $47.5 million, the imports reached $16.3 million. Belarus posted a trade surplus of $31.2 million.
