MINSK, 24 December (BelTA) – The results of foreign intelligence work show that the long-term plans of Belarus’ opponents have not changed, Chairman of the State Security Committee (KGB) of Belarus Ivan Tertel told the media following his report to the Belarusian president on 24 December, BelTA has learned.
Ivan Tertel noted that the report to the head of state included a comprehensive overview of the KGB’s work, including foreign intelligence and counterintelligence. In this regard, consideration was given to the complex situation developing both around Belarus and in certain regions of the world. The KGB head emphasized that the results of foreign intelligence and counterintelligence work are integral to key policy decisions, including on foreign affairs.
“In general, foreign intelligence work is an entirely classified subject. However, certain aspects naturally draw public interest, and on the president’s instructions, we inform our citizens about some of the activities conducted by our foreign intelligence service,” Ivan Tertel said.
The KGB head stated that foreign intelligence operates in areas where Belarus identifies its critical national interests, and where potential threats to the state are emerging. “At the moment, these are, of course, issues related to the buildup of military capabilities in neighboring states. We observe the increase in defense budgets and the enhancement of infrastructure in areas that could become theaters of war. We also see that there are absolutely no grounds for such measures. And this is a cause for concern. This is an additional task for foreign intelligence: to uncover the real plans regarding our country,” he stated.

According to Ivan Tertel, the head of state is reported on possible aggressive intentions towards Belarus. “Based on the intelligence documents presented to the head of state that are used for decision-making, I must state that the long-term plans of our opponents have not changed. They include a geopolitical reconfiguration of the region and, as a related objective, the overthrow of constitutional order in Belarus,” he emphasized.
Ivan Tertel also highlighted the existence of destabilization centers in neighboring countries, noting their ongoing decline. Tensions between them are escalating into a confrontation over the distribution of financial resources.” This funding is shrinking due to the current issues affecting Western NATO countries. For the near future, $30 million has been allocated, which, according to their estimates, is insufficient. At the same time, they are adapting their tactics and revising their approaches to meet their objectives,” Ivan Tertel said. “There are certain trends they are now trying to implement. In particular, focusing on our youth and on the government institutions. We assure you that these plans will not succeed.”
Overall, the KGB chairman stated, the country’s foreign intelligence and counterintelligence services fulfill the tasks set by the commander-in-chief. “Incidentally, just recently there was an anniversary date: the 105th anniversary of the foreign intelligence bodies of the State Security Committee. It is a significant date for our entire foreign intelligence team. I would like to emphasize that people of special mettle, devoted to the Motherland, work in intelligence. We live in peace, while they essentially wage their battles on the invisible front in a combat environment, finding themselves in various difficult situations. On behalf of the head of state, I would like to take this opportunity to convey to them best wishes. Stay strong. We never forget what tasks you are working on, what you are doing for the Motherland,” Ivan Tertel said.
