Hope for irreversible normalization of Belarus-EU relations

BRUSSELS, 24 November (BelTA) – I hope that the normalization of Belarus-EU relations is irreversible, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told the media following the Eastern Partnership summit, BelTA informs.

“In my opinion, the way of thinking of our European partners has changed in a certain way. They understand that every country requires a special approach. They are talking about it and they have adopted relevant documents, including in the Eastern Partnership. At some point, they agreed, quite properly, with our idea that the so-called differentiated approach was needed,” the minister said.

He underlined that Belarus has never been a country that caused any problems to the European partners. For instance, it ensures a high level of border security and effectively prevents illegal migration, drug trafficking, gunrunning, and international crime. “We aspire to preserve our constructive stabilizing role in the region, which helps strengthen security. Our European partners commend such approaches. Moreover, they think that we are one of the most consistent and reliable partners for the EU,” Vladimir Makei noted.

In his words, there are some problems in relations with the EU that concern the European partners. “We do not regard these concerns as insuperable. We are engaged in talks and discussions on these matters. I believe that step by step, developing and expanding the positive atmosphere in our relations, we will reach the point when the normalization of our relations becomes irreversible,” the minister highlighted.

“We should be moving towards this goal gradually, setting achievable goals and working hard to reach them,” Vladimir Makei added.
