High-ranking Cuban government official to visit Belarus

MINSK, 20 May (BelTA) – First Vice President of the State Council and the Council of Ministers of Cuba Miguel Mario Diaz-Canel Bermudez is expected to visit Belarus soon. The entire range of Belarusian-Cuban relations will be discussed during the visit, BelTA learned from Dmitry Mironchik, Head of the Information Office, Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Belarusian side views the visit as a testimony of deep mutual interest in further advancement of the bilateral relations, the enhancement of cooperation in trade, economic, scientific, technical, humanitarian and other spheres, said Dmitry Mironchik.

“We are confident that results of the visit will give a powerful impulse to the development of Belarusian-Cuban cooperation, to stronger friendship for the benefit of our countries and nations,” said the Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Cuba is a leading partner of Belarus in Latin America and the international scene as a whole. This is why expanding the relations is a priority. Dmitry Mironchik reminded about intensive bilateral political contacts at all levels. Thus the Belarusian minister of foreign affairs visited Cuba in summer 2014. Leaders of the two countries met during the session of the UN General Assembly in September 2015.

The first session of the Belarusian-Cuban commission on cooperation in science and technologies took place in Havana in early May. The session touched upon promising avenues of scientific, technical, and innovative cooperation, including in the area of healthcare, agriculture, mechanical engineering, power engineering, and environmental protection. The program on Belarusian-Cuban scientific, technical, and innovative cooperation in 2016-2018 was adopted.

Belarus and Cuba are about to start the practical implementation of important projects in the area of trade, economy, and other ones. Products made by Minsk Automobile Plant (MAZ) and Minsk Tractor Works (MTZ) are well-known in Cuba. These companies are now considering the possibility of opening representative offices in Cuba, noted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman.
