Ghana’s president arrives in Belarus on official visit

Ghana’s president arrives in Belarus on official visit

MINSK, 5 June (BelTA) - President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana has arrived in Belarus on an official visit, BelTA has learned.

Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Karankevich welcomed the president of Ghana at the airport. Right by the plane, the guest received the traditional bread and salt – a symbol of hospitality, deep respect, and prosperity. Upon his arrival in Minsk, the Ghanaian leader laid flowers at the Victory Monument, honoring the memory of those who died during the Great Patriotic War.

This is the first highest-level visit in the history of bilateral relations.

At the ceremony to present credentials in April of this year, where the ambassador of Ghana was among other diplomats, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed that Belarus sees this African country as an important and promising partner.

“We have much to offer for cooperation. This is not only highly demanded agricultural machinery but also comprehensive solutions for ensuring food security, adapted specifically to the needs of your country. We are committed to long-term joint work, including the establishment of service centers and spare-parts warehouses, as well as training local specialists,” the Belarusian leader said.

Earlier, the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that a large package of documents and projects had been prepared for signing during the visit, similar in scope to Belarus’ cooperation model with Zimbabwe.

This year, Belarusian Foreign Affairs Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov made several visits to African countries, including Ghana. It was reported that an order had been placed for the production of around 3,000 units of agricultural machinery in Belarus, along with concrete agreements to increase supplies of dry milk and meat. Overall, Minsk expects a multiple-fold increase in deliveries across several product categories.

There are also plans to expand cooperation in education. Around 80 Ghanaian students are currently studying in Belarus, and there is interest in increasing this number, especially in medical and agricultural specialties.
