German president to attend conference in Minsk on 29-30 June

MINSK, 14 June (BelTA) – Germany President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is expected to take part in the conference Memory for Common European Future at the Minsk Johannes Rau International Education Center on 29-30 June, BelTA learned from the organizers.

The conference will mark the official opening of the second stage of Trostenets Memorial. The meeting will focus on the role of the youth, local initiatives, churches and religious associations in the further development of a common European memory culture. The conference will bring together over 250 participants, including representatives from Austria, Belarus, Germany, Poland, Russia, Ukraine and the Czech Republic.

One of the central events scheduled for 29 June will be the discussion of the European memory culture between young historians from Germany, Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, an also the president of Germany. It is expected that the presidential delegation will include representatives of the German local authorities who supported the construction of Trostenets Memorial.

The conference is organized by the Minsk Johannes Rau International Education Center and the Dortmund International Education Center in partnership with the The German War Graves Commission and with the support of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The international educational centers in Dortmund and Minsk are interested in attracting the attention of key players and the general public to the importance of continuing work on historical and political education, research and building a dialogue around the theme of memory culture in Europe.
