Gennady Savilov elected chairman of Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation

MINSK, 28 June (BelTA) – Gennady Savilov was unanimously elected Chairman of the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation during the conference of the federation on 28 June.

The new head of the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation said that he carefully examined the state of affairs before accepting the offer to lead the federation. There is no time to sit idle. “The preparations for the country’s championship are already in progress. We should continue to develop youth hockey, which is a source of new professional players. We also need to appoint a new coach of the national team of Belarus. Most likely this will not be a foreign specialist. The primary objective is to return to the IIHF elite division. The task for the medium term is to advance to the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing,” Gennady Savilov said.

The second point that requires attention is the relationship between the federation and the country’s leading hockey club Dinamo Minsk. “It is no secret that this cooperation is far from being ideal. Vice Prime Minister Vasily Zharko suggested that the club and the federation should share one supervisory board. We will be working on this. We want both the club and the national team to do well,” Gennady Savilov.

According to Gennady Savilov, to play in the elite division the national team must have world-class players. “The role of HC Dinamo Minsk will be strengthened. In turn, the national championship must be competitive and serve as the springboard for young athletes,” he noted.

He believes that the hockey federation should coordinate the activities of all agencies engaged in the development of the sport. “The work with regional administrations, the Sport and Tourism Ministry, the National Olympic Committee is very important,” Gennady Savilov said.

The conference to review the results of the past season was held in Minsk on 28 June. Semyon Shapiro decided to resign over the unsatisfactory results of the national team which was relegated from the elite division. Former hockey player Gennady Savilov was elected new head of the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation.
