Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia to highlight Great Victory legacy

MINSK, 7 February (BelTA) – The 7th edition of the Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia will take place in Minsk and Minsk Oblast in autumn. The legacy of the Great Victory will be the main theme of the forum, Chair of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly Natalya Kochanova told reporters prior to the first session of the organizing committee of the forum on 7 February, BelTA has learned.

According to Natalya Kochanova, the year 2020 will be special as it will mark the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory. “This year is important for us and our Russian partners. Therefore the forum will be themed around the historical legacy of the Great Victory as the foundation for promoting social, economic and spiritual bonds between the people of Belarus and Russia. This overarching theme will strike a cord with everyone,” the speaker said.

Usually forums of regions result in a great number of cooperation agreements. “We hope that this will be a large-scale event that will take us to a new level of cooperation across all the areas,” Natalya Kochanova noted.

Panelists will discuss interparliamentary cooperation in the context of preserving historical legacy, patriotic upbringing, support for young people living in rural communities, joint economic projects, and cooperation as part of international organizations. There will be a session of the Interparliamentary Commission for Interregional Cooperation of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus and the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia. The speakers of the upper chambers of the Belarusian and Russian parliaments will meet with regional authorities of the two countries.

At the session of the organizing committee Natalya Kochanova said that she expects the program of the forum to abound in interesting ideas and proposals. “I would like to see some novel solutions that will be of interest to us and our Russian partners,” she noted. In her words, Belarus hopes the forum will be arranged very well and will become a remarkable event.

The six previous forums of regions of Belarus and Russia resulted in signing a total of 302 cooperation agreements and commercial contracts worth about $2 billion.
