FM: No alternative to close cooperation between Belarus, EU

MINSK, 23 November (BelTA) – There is no alternative to close cooperation between Belarus and the European Union, Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said in an interview to Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“We had to cease the work of the Belarus-EU Coordination Group. We see no point in continuing dialogue on human rights with the European Union. We put this dialogue on pause until the European Union decides on changing the policy of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank that decided to put on hold cooperation programs with Belarus,” the minister said.

“We do not see much point in working fully within the Eastern Partnership initiative. It does not mean that we are withdrawing from this initiative. We will see what actions our partners will take. All these measures are only a response to the destructive steps that our European partners have taken towards Belarus,” the minister said.

Vladimir Makei is convinced: “There is no alternative to close interaction, cooperation between Belarus and the European Union. Even our recent experience shows that just four or five years of normal cooperation have brought more benefits for all (the European partners, the Belarusian state, and the civil society, which our partners are so concerned about) than the previous 15 years.”
