FM: Belarus, Nicaragua are set to intensify cooperation in trade, economy

MINSK, 19 May (BelTA) – Belarus and Nicaragua are determined to significantly ramp up cooperation in trade and economy, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Sergei Aleinik said as he met with Nicaragua’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Denis Moncada Colindres, BelTA has learned.

Sergei Aleinik noted that Nicaragua’s foreign minister met with Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko earlier in the morning. The Belarusian foreign minister emphasized that this meeting confirmed the intention of the two countries to dramatically intensify trade and economic cooperation. According to him, bilateral cooperation will primarily focus on the manufacturing industry and the supply of Belarusian equipment.

“As far as economy is concerned, our key areas of focus are cooperation in manufacturing, the use of Belarusian agricultural technologies in Nicaragua, and supply of passenger vehicles and road construction equipment to this country,” said Sergei Aleinik.

In May 2024 Belarus and Nicaragua will mark the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations. The Belarusian foreign minister is confident that by this time the bilateral cooperation will have made substantial progress in the political, trade, economic and humanitarian spheres.

“Nicaragua is our reliable and trustworthy partner and ally in Latin America. And we know that we can always count on you. Just like you can count on Belarusians. It is very important to keep moving forward, to keep the bilateral agenda relevant, to flesh it out with new projects and cooperation programs,” the minister stressed.

The trade between Belarus and Nicaragua is still rather small and is dominated by supplies from Belarus. The legal framework is under development. Work is underway to align key draft agreements that will lay the basis for trade and economic cooperation.
