FM: Belarus is ready to support UNESCO’s initiatives to prevent conflicts

MINSK, 23 May (BelTA) – Belarus is ready to uphold any UNESCO’s initiatives that will facilitate a constructive dialogue, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said on 23 May at an extended session of the National Commission for UNESCO timed to the 65th anniversary of Belarus’ membership in this organization, BelTA has learned.

“Belarus will gladly uphold any UNESCO’s initiatives that contribute to a constructive dialogue and removal of dividing lines between countries and peoples, initiatives that bring people together, help find common ground and prevent tensions from turning into full conflicts,” Vladimir Makei said.

He noted: “The Republic of Belarus is strongly convinced that UNESCO has never been more relevant than now. It keeps playing an important role in promoting peace and security all over the world. The UNESCO Charter says that wars start in people’s minds; therefore longing for peace should be rooted in people’s minds. Belarus is fully aware of it, therefore in the face of a difficult situation in the world and the region, Belarus is ready to promote the resumption of a dialogue in order to strengthen trust, security and cooperation.”

Vladimir Makei pointed to the lack of mutual understanding and trust in today’s international relations. He is convinced that UNESCO can help rectify this situation, as the organization has a wealth of experience in celebrating cultural diversity and promoting humanism and education.
