First international electoral observers to get accredited in Belarus on 4 September

MINSK, 17 August (BelTA) – The first international election observation mission will get accredited to monitor Belarus’ parliamentary elections on 4 September, Chairperson of the Belarusian Central Election Commission (CEC) Lidia Yermoshina told the media on 17 August, BelTA has learned.

“This is the mission of the CIS Executive Committee,” Lidia Yermoshina specified. Arrangements have been made for the meeting between the CEC chair and Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee Sergei Lebedev. The first electoral observer ID cards will be handed over at this meeting.

“In addition to that, as far as I know, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was notified about the intention of the OSCE/ODIHR to send a Needs Assessment Mission to Belarus. This is technical staff,” Lidia Yermoshina said. The findings of this mission will determine the number of OSCE observers at the elections.

The Belaya Rus public association held a forum in Minsk on 17 August to discuss the elections to the House of Representatives. About 300 activists from all over the country gathered in Minsk for the forum.

A seminar to analyze the role of public associations in Belarus’ electoral system took place on the sidelines of the forum. Taking part in it was Lidia Yermoshina. She discussed the peculiarities of the ongoing electoral process and its major stages.

A broad participation meeting of the Board of the Belaya Rus public association was held to discuss the organization’s participation in the elections.

A reminder, Belarus sent invitations to monitor its parliamentary elections to a number of international organizations, such as the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the CIS Executive Committee and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. There were plans to sent invitations to the central election commissions of the Russian Federation, Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and the Association of World Election Bodies headquartered in the Republic of Korea.
