Fight against saboteurs in focus of first stage of Belarusian-Russian army exercise Zapad 2017

MINSK, 15 September (BelTA) – Destroying saboteurs of the imaginary enemy was highly prioritized during the first stage of the Belarusian-Russian strategic army exercise Zapad 2017, BelTA learned from Vladimir Makarov, Head of the Information Office, Press Secretary of the Central Office for Ideology of the Belarusian Defense Ministry, on 15 September.

During the first stage of the Zapad 2017 exercise in the course of defensive preparations and other missions priority attention was paid to the fight against illegal armed groups and sabotage and reconnaissance forces of the imaginary enemy, said the source.

Vladimir Makarov underlined that in all the modern armed conflicts special operations forces and other special-purpose army units play an increasingly pronounced role. These units can act together with the regular army and irregular troops. Illegal armed groups, private military companies, terrorist and extremist organizations also come to the forefront in modern conflicts in addition to the wide use of sabotage (partisan) and terrorist warfare.

According to Vladimir Makarov, the international experience indicates that in order to successfully destroy a sabotage or partisan unit the opposing force needs to have a combat potential 7-10 times higher than the potential of the sabotage unit.

Using countersabotage units of special operations forces against sabotage forces is most effective. Special operations forces represent the elite of the Belarusian army, noted the official. The missions they are supposed to accomplish are in full compliance with the national military doctrine and international law. The training of the special operations forces is on par with the world’s best and most up-to-date routines for training special operations units.
