European Commission experts on visit to Belarus to assess situation with refugees on border

MINSK, 23 November (BelTA) - In accordance with the agreements reached during the contacts of Belarus with the European Union, experts of the European Commission are visiting Belarus on 22-23 November to assess the situation of refugees at the border, Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Anatoly Glaz said.

The EU delegation has already held meetings at the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and also with representative offices of international organizations.

Belarus's position on the falsehood and absurdity of accusations by the country of artificially creating a migration crisis on the border with the EU was emphasized during the meetings at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The European partners were informed about Belarus’ efforts to alleviate the situation of refugees on the border by transferring them to a temporary accommodation facility, providing necessary humanitarian and medical assistance, including in cooperation with international organizations, primarily with the UN agencies. Attention was drawn to the unacceptable, from the point of view of international law and the principles of humanism, approaches and methods of treatment of refugees at the border by some neighboring European Union member states, including the use of special forces and means against them and physical violence to prevent their entry into the European Union.

Belarus also emphasized the need to find ways for asylum seekers to realize their aspiration to enter the European Union.

The parties agreed to continue Belarus-EU contacts in order to resolve the migration problem at the Belarusian-European border.
