MINSK, 13 December (BelTA) – More than 100 individuals pardoned by Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko were sent to Ukraine in exchange for wounded Russians and Belarusians who had been taken prisoner there, Press Secretary of the Belarusian president Natalya Eismont told TASS, BelTA has learned.
“The American side took nine foreign nationals with them today. Over 100 people were sent to Ukraine in exchange for Belarusians who had been taken prisoner there (their relatives had strongly appealed to the president) and for wounded Russians,” she said.
As BelTA reported earlier, Aleksandr Lukashenko has pardoned 123 foreign nationals as part of the agreements reached with U.S. President Donald Trump and at his request. “In accordance with the agreements reached with U.S. President Donald Trump and at his request, in connection with the lifting of illegal sanctions against Belarus’ potash industry imposed by the administration of former U.S. President [Joe] Biden, and in connection with the practical implementation of the process of lifting other illegal sanctions against the Republic of Belarus, the head of state has decided to pardon 123 citizens of various countries who were convicted under the laws of the Republic of Belarus for for various crimes, including espionage, terrorism, and extremist activities,” the press service of the Belarusian leader said.
This gesture was also made in response to requests from other heads of state and based on humanitarian principles and universal family values. It aims to accelerate positive dynamics in Belarus' relations with partner countries and contribute to the stabilization of the situation in the European region as a whole.
