MINSK, 6 September (BelTA) – In an interview with the First News TV Channel, Press Secretary of the Belarusian President Natalya Eismont described the reaction of the Western countries to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in China as completely predictable, BelTA has learned.

When asked how to respond to Western media coverage that portrayed the summit as a “gathering of autocrats” or an “axis of evil”, in contrast to domestic experts who referred to it as an “axis of good”, Natalya Eismont said: “Our experts have assessed it correctly.”

She explained that every morning, including during official trips, the president receives a media digest that summarizes global coverage, paying particular attention to reactions to recent events and his participation in them. The Western reaction to the SCO summit was not unnoticed.

“The reaction was completely expected. Frankly speaking, we would have been surprised if it hadn’t happened or if it had been different,” Natalya Eismont said. “First, it shows how concerned the West is about developments within our organization. Second, it clearly demonstrates and repeatedly confirms that we are heading in the right direction.”

She cited a recent example: “Recently, the UN General Assembly has voted on a resolution regarding cooperation with the SCO. The resolution was adopted. Twenty-seven countries voted against it, twenty-eight abstained. Everyone has seen which countries were against and which abstained from voting. That fact alone says a lot,” Natalya Eismont added.
