Dapkiunas, Thomson discuss challenges facing UN

MINSK, 11 August (BelTA) - Andrei Dapkiunas, the outgoing Permanent Representative of Belarus to the United Nations, met with President of the UN General Assembly Peter Thomson on 10 August at the UN headquarters in New York, BelTA has learned from the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus.

“The parties discussed their common many-year work at the UN and the most pressing challenges facing the organization. The head of the General Assembly and the Belarusian Ambassador agreed that one of the most important tasks today is to prevent and overcome the artificial lines of division and separation between various groups of states both in the global arena and at the UN,” the ministry informed.

Peter Thomson shared his plans of creating an interfaith sculpture memorial ‘Tree of Life’ on the East River island across the UN headquarters. Andrei Dapkiunas noted Belarus’ commitment to the unification initiatives aimed at improving understanding among peoples and strengthening the world peace, and also expressed readiness to assist practically in their implementation.

As it was reported, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko appointed Andrei Dapkiunas Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus.
