Contact group on Ukraine resumes talks in Minsk

MINSK, 18 October (BelTA) – The meeting of the trilateral contact group on Ukraine is underway in Minsk, BelTA learned from the Twitter account of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The trilateral contact group last met in the Belarusian capital on 4 October. Martin Sajdik, the OSCE's special representative in the trilateral contact group on Ukraine, stated that in the period since the latest negotiations the number of ceasefire violations in the conflict zone has remained considerably lower than the number registered before the ceasefire was enforced on the occasion of the new academic year. Thanks to the latest armistice and ‘the harvest armistice’, which the trilateral contact group on Ukraine agreed at the beginning of the summer, the number of civilian casualties has been dropping steadily and noticeably since June. According to the UN data, September saw the lowest number of civilian victims on record — two dead and 16 injured. “Unfortunately, we cannot say that the overall situation in the conflict zone is stable, this is why the trilateral contact group on Ukraine will continue doing its utmost to secure the timeless ceasefire regime in the future,” stressed the OSCE special representative.

The economic group discussed water supplies last time. The group also talked over the property of individuals and legal entities, the ways to repay debts to the former workers of the Ukrainian Railways in certain districts of the self-proclaimed DNR and LNR. The working group on humanitarian affairs continued the discussion on the exchange of the persons detained as a result of the conflict. The participants discussed the observance of the ceasefire, the withdrawal of forces and equipment, including heavy weapons, the protection of civil infrastructure and the creation of so-called security zones around them.
