CIS, OSCE, Council of Europe missions expected to monitor presidential election in Belarus

MINSK, 25 March (BelTA) – Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina expects that missions of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and the Council of Europe will take part in monitoring the presidential election campaign in Belarus. The official made the statement at the science and practice seminar held for active members of the national public association Belaya Rus on 25 March to discuss social, political, and economic aspects of Belarus at the current stage of development, BelTA has learned.

The CEC Chairwoman pointed out that Belarus traditionally invites international observers, however, the matter is outside the area of expertise of the Central Election Commission. As a rule, the decision is made by the head of state together with concerned government agencies when the date of the election is chosen. “But the agreement in principle in favor of inviting the traditional missions — the OSCE and the CIS — has been obtained. Apart from that, the Council of Europe takes a close interest in Belarus. We are not members of the Council of Europe at the moment. Nevertheless, Mr Andrea Rigoni (rapporteur on Belarus of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe) has been to Belarus and he has already asked about the possibility of getting an invitation,” noted Lidia Yermoshina.CIS, OSCE, Council of Europe missions expected to monitor presidential election in Belarus
