CEC: Belarusians can vote early at constitutional referendum

CEC: Belarusians can vote early at constitutional referendum

MINSK, 25 January (BelTA) - Belarusians will be able to vote early at the referendum on Belarus’ Constitution amendments, deputy head of legal, analytical and methodological work of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Ivan Tolkach said in an interview to CTV TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“The referendum, just like the elections, provides for early voting. Early voting will take place from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00 from Tuesday to Saturday, with the main voting day set for Sunday,” said Ivan Tolkach.

The deputy head of the department explained how a referendum is different from a presidential election. “First of all, there are neither candidates nor campaigning. There is only campaigning for the referendum yes or no question,” he said.

“As for the upcoming referendum, two conditions must necessarily be met in order to adopt amendments and additions to the Constitution. The first one is that more than half of the citizens included in the lists participate in the referendum. In this case, the referendum will be considered valid. The second condition is that more than half of the people on the list vote “yes”,” said Ivan Tolkach.

As BelTA reported earlier, the nationwide referendum on amendments and additions to the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus shall be held on 27 February 2022. The referendum question is “Do you accept the amendments and additions to the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus?”

The decision adopted by the referendum shall enter into force 10 days after its official publication. It shall be an integral part of the Constitution.
