Call to update Belarus-Russia Union State Treaty

MINSK, 7 February (BelTA) – The Belarus-Russia Union State Treaty requires an update, Russian Ambassador to Belarus Alexander Surikov told a press conference on 7 February, BelTA has learned.

“Although a number of tasks set forth in the treaty have been accomplished over the last years, today the document requires an update and amendments, taking into account the establishment of the Eurasian Economic Union. Moreover, twenty years have passed, and partly new practices have been adopted in relations and human rights protection,” the diplomat said.

In this context, taking into account the formation of a new Eurasian space, the two countries have a task to update the Union State Treaty to bring it in line with today’s realities and human rights, Alexander Surikov added.

He recalled the parliamentary hearings which took place in Bryansk in December 2017 during the 53rd session of the Union State Parliamentary Assembly. “Many Union State MPs, both Belarusian and Russian ones, spoke in favor of assessing the effectiveness of the Union State Treaty and tacking stock of what has been achieved and overseen. Plans call for working out proposals to introduce relevant amendments to the effective document,” the ambassador stated.

Belarusian and Russian MPs, the Union State Standing Committee, and diplomatic missions are now working in this field.
