Brussels hosts Belarus-EU dialogue on human rights

MINSK, 20 July (BelTA) – Another round of the dialogue on human rights between Belarus and the European Union was held in Brussels on 20 July, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Belarusian delegation was led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Oleg Kravchenko. The delegation of the European Union was headed by Managing Director for Europe and Central Asia in the European External Action Service Thomas Mayr-Harting. Taking part in the event were representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Justice Ministry of Belarus and representatives of the European External Action Service, the European Commission and also a number of the EU member states (as observers).

The meeting discussed the current state and prospects for further cooperation between Belarus and the European Union in the area of human rights, including the implementation of the Belarus' National Human Rights Plan and recommendations within the Universal Periodic Review of the United Nations Human Rights Council, reforms in the penal system, civil liberties, protection of vulnerable groups of the population, gender equality, combating domestic violence. The parties also shared opinions on a number of individual cases in observing human rights in the EU and Belarus.

Representatives of Belarusian non-government organizations also took part in the discussion of the agenda.
