Belarusian Union of Journalists hopes for new level of cooperation with European partners

Belarusian Union of Journalists hopes for new level of cooperation with European partners

MINSK, 20 March (BelTA) – The Belarusian Union of Journalists hopes that cooperation with European partners will step up to reach a new level, Chairman of the Belarusian Union of Journalists Anatoly Lemeshenok said as he met with OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Harlem Desir on 20 March, BelTA has learned.

Anatoly Lemeshenok stressed that he was very pleased to meet with the OSCE representative. “Probably, we are entering a new era in bilateral relations,” he said. The head of the union stated, however, that contacts with counterparts from the European Union have not been developing actively enough. Earlier, journalistic delegations from the EU came more often to meet and discuss matters with the Belarusian media community. The Belarusian Union of Journalists hope that the situation would change for the better.

The chairman of the union emphasized the importance of the activity of the OSCE representative and called on him to study all emerging matters in detail.

In turn, Harlem Desir said that the visit to Belarus was an opportunity for him to talk with representatives of government bodies and journalists. He asked the chairman of the union to update him on the working conditions created for journalists in the country and the development of mass media in Belarus in general. The parties discussed the laws that regulate the mass media sector, accreditation of journalists and accessibility of information. Anatoly Lemeshenok answered every question of the OSCE representative.
