Belarusian, Russian fighters to fly cover for attack aircraft on last day of Zapad 2017 exercise

MINSK, 19 September (BelTA) – Belarusian and Russian crews will pilot MiG-29 jet fighters to provide cover to attack aircraft as part of the Belarusian-Russian strategic army exercise Zapad 2017 on 20 September, BelTA learned from Vladimir Makarov, Head of the Information Office, Press Secretary of the Central Office for Ideology of the Belarusian Defense Ministry, on 19 September.

A mixed unit of the 115th Air Defense Missile Regiment will have to practice protecting a military taskforce from air strikes in the Domanovo exercise area. Belarusian and Russian MiG-29 jet fighters will fly cover for attack aircraft and a long-range radar surveillance and targeting aircraft A-50.

The Lepelsky exercise area will be hot on the final day of the army exercise as army units will practice advancing and pursuing, blocking, and eliminating the last few illegal armed groups.

In the Osipovichsky exercise area army units will practice destroying an initially successful enemy assault in order to regain their previous positions after a counterattack.

The combined arms exercise area Borisovsky will deserve close attention on 20 September. Various units of the Belarusian and Russian armies will deploy over there to repulse an assault of the imaginary enemy and stage a counteroffensive followed by the destruction of the enemy, with lost positions regained.

Su-34 and Su-25 aircraft, Mi-24 and Mi-28N helicopters will deliver strikes against advancing forces of the imaginary enemy. Su-24MR aircraft will verify whether aerial strikes have been successful while Mi-8 helicopters will be busy landing paratroopers.

In the course of these tactical episodes capabilities of new weapons and military hardware, which were developed by Belarusian defense contractors, will be demonstrated. The hardware on display will include the lightly armored vehicle V1 (OAO MZKT) with an antitank rocket system, the armored personnel carrier Cayman with a 7.62mm four-barreled machine gun, the anti-drone radio warfare rifle Groza-R (KB Radar), and upgraded combat tanks T-72 BMZ.

Representatives of international organizations (UN, OSCE, NATO, CIS, CSTO, the International Committee of the Red Cross), military attaches accredited in Belarus, and military observers from Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, Estonia, Sweden, and Norway will observe the active phase of the army exercise.
