Belarusian report on fulfilling nuclear safety convention presented in IAEA

MINSK, 22 March (BelTA) – A Belarusian report was presented during the joint eighth and ninth review meeting of the contracting parties to the Convention on Nuclear Safety in the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria, BelTA learned from representatives of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor).

Gosatomnadzor Head Olga Lugovskaya led the Belarusian delegation. She informed participants of the meeting about the fulfillment of Belarus’ commitments within the framework of the convention since 2017 and up till now, about changes and progress in implementation of the first nuclear energy program. Olga Lugovskaya also mentioned what measures Belarus had taken with regard to challenges and recommendations given to Belarus during the previous meeting. Individual matters were also covered such as safety culture and the realization of principles of the 2015 Vienna Declaration on Nuclear Safety. How Belarus takes into account lessons taught by the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident was mentioned.

After that Belarus’ national report was discussed with representatives of other countries. A draft of the resulting document with conclusions concerning Belarus was also reviewed.

The joint eighth and ninth review meeting of the contracting parties to the Convention on Nuclear Safety will last through 31 March.
