Belarusian Parliament to hold hearings on 75th anniversary of Great Victory in April

MINSK, 26 February (BelTA) – The parliamentary hearings “The 75th anniversary of the Great Victory: Historical memory and patriotism are the most important moral guidelines of the Belarusian society and the state, factors of consolidation in the face of modern challenges and threats” will be held in Belarus in April. This decision was made by the Council of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus on 26 February, BelTA has learned.

“In the landmark year of the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory, in the face of increasing attempts to rewrite the history, to diminish the role of the Soviet people in defeating fascism, to hold the Soviet Union accountable, on a par with the Nazis, for the war we deem it necessary to express, at the parliamentary level, the position of the Belarusian people regarding the inadmissibility of distorting the historical truth about the Great Patriotic War, to draw attention to the issues of further perpetuation of the military feat of the older generation and to build a moral and patriotic core of young people based on love for the Fatherland and respect for the historical heritage,”  said Gennady Davydko, the chairman of the Standing Commission on Human Rights, National Relations and Mass Media of the House of Representatives.

The open parliamentary hearings will be held during the spring session of the House of Representatives with the participation of Great Patriotic War veterans, representatives of government agencies, the public, major confessions, the diplomatic corps and international organizations. The hearings will focus on the issues of social protection of veterans and persons of equivalent status, educating young people in the context of preserving the historical memory, strengthening the moral foundations of the society and the state, immortalizing the heroic feat of the Belarusian people, and implementing the national plan of action to celebrate the Great Victory. Following the hearings, the MPs will adopt a resolution and recommendations.

The issue of preserving the historical truth is more relevant than ever, Chairman of the House of Representatives Vladimir Andreichenko stressed. “The time is really difficult, explosive. You can see what the attitude is now to the Great Patriotic War, to the victory of the Soviet people. So all these issues certainly need to be discussed. There is only one truth. Today the results of the war are rewritten for the sake of someone's interests. Rewriting the history is very dangerous. We must preserve this historical truth, protect it,” he said.

In today's environment there is a need to launch a national electronic resource “Belarus Remembers” on the basis of the historical and documentary books “Memory”, said Lilia Ananich, deputy chairperson of the Standing Committee on Human Rights, National Relations and Mass Media of the House of Representatives. “75 years is a landmark date. Our fathers and grandfathers have brought peace for the whole world. The contribution of the Belarusian people is enormous. We need to continue to preserve this memory and to strengthen the core of our nation on its basis,” she added.
