The Day of Unity of the Peoples of Russia and Belarus is marked on 2 April. On this day in 1996, the Presidents of Russia and Belarus signed an agreement on founding the Community of Russia and Belarus, which heralded the creation of the Union State. For most Belarusians and Russians the Day of Unity represents the inviolability of the centuries-old brotherhood, the willingness of the peoples to build their lives and create the future together. The integration between the two states relies on a solid foundation of spiritual unity, common historical and human destiny, and mutual interest in further joint sustainable development. One of the major events uniting the peoples of Belarus and Russia is the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the 70th anniversary of which is celebrated this year.
