MINSK, 13 December (BelTA) – Belarusian MPs are taking part in the spotlight session "Parliamentarians and Effective Development Cooperation: The oversight challenge" organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union on 13 December, BelTA has learned.

The meeting is held within the framework of the Effective Development Cooperation Summit, which is held by the Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation (onsite and virtual participation) in Geneva on 12-14 December.

"The Inter-Parliamentary Union includes 179 states. Belarus was admitted in 1995. Various events are constantly held under its auspices, and the Belarusian Parliament is actively involved in this work," said Sergei Stelmashok, a member of the Standing Committee on Budget and Finance of the House of Representatives.

The event is set to assess the role of inter-parliamentary cooperation and the contribution of MPs to the SDGs by means of improving the national legislative framework, exercising oversight over the executive authorities, representing the interests of their constituents and monitoring the effective implementation of SDG commitments.

"The summit is aimed primarily at monitoring the progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals. There are 17 Sustainable Development Goals that all states support and are trying to achieve. They are mainly aimed at creating comfortable conditions for people and promoting development in the areas that are designated by the goals," the deputy said.

This session focuses on new ways to strengthen the role of parliaments in ensuring accountability of development cooperation through parliamentary oversight of the budget and related processes to adhere to national legal requirements to ensure aid is used in the most effective way

"The budget package has already passed the first reading, and next week it is expected to get the second reading," Sergei Stelmashok said.
