MINSK, 9 June (BelTA) - Belarus’ Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva Yuri Ambrazevich has been appointed Co-Coordinator of the Way Ahead Working Group of the UN Conference on Disarmament, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“The Belarusian representative will will oversee the work on such matters as the new types of weapons of mass destruction, radiological weapons, and also the comprehensive program on disarmament and transparency in armaments with a view to working out a negotiating mandate on these matters for the Conference,” the press service noted.
This appointment is especially important in the context of Belarus’ presentation of its draft resolution on the prohibition of the development and manufacture of new types of weapons of mass destruction and new systems of such weapons, which was submitted to the UN General Assembly First Committee in 2017.
“The decision of the conference once again confirms the authority of Belarus as an active and consistent supporter of the effort to build a safer world,” the press service remarked.
