Belarusian and Russian MPs suggest developing cross-border cooperation program

MOSCOW, 25 March (BelTA) – Members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Belarus-Russia Union State suggest drafting a Union State program for the development of the frontier regions of Belarus and Russia, read the draft recommendations adopted at the PA permanent workshop “Interregional cooperation in the Union State: Experience, Problems. Prospects” held in Russia’s Veliky Novgorod on 23-24 March, BelTA learned from the press service of the Assembly.

The participants believe that the governments of the member states of the Union State should provide full assistance to the efforts to bolster interregional ties.

In particular, the meeting discussed ways to increase trade, support establishing trade and logistics centers and promote cooperation in innovations.

In order to boost interregional and cross-border cooperation the national parliaments of Belarus and Russia are encouraged to assist in the organization of multilateral meetings of regional authorities and to strengthen the monitoring of the implementation of the interregional agreements on trade, economic, scientific, and cultural interaction, and the implementation of regional programs and activities of the Union State held.

The workshop also considered the influence of the media on the integration in the Union State and decided to encourage the Information Ministries of Belarus and Russia to contribute to the dissemination of the information through mass media about the real achievements of interregional and cross-border cooperation between the two countries.

In addition, the statistical agencies of Belarus and Russia have been recommended to develop proposals for the introduction of single statistical reporting on the performance of regions, including on economic and social effectiveness of joint activities.

Members of the Parliamentary Assembly stressed that interregional cooperation is one of the most important elements of the Russia-Belarus integration. Therefore sustainable development of each of the regions of the Union State and ensuring their interaction are important conditions for the success of the Union State development.

The draft recommendations have been adopted after all proposals of the workshop participants have been collected and analyzed. The document will be sent to the Union State authorities, ministries and agencies of Belarus and Russia.

The event was attended by the Union State MPs, representatives of the Permanent Committee of the Union State, the Belarusian Embassy in Russia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of, the Novgorod Oblast Government of and Duma, academies of science and business communities of Russia and Belarus, and also representatives of the leading research institutes and universities of the two countries.
