MINSK, 9 February (BelTA) – Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei met with new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Nguyen Van Ngu in Minsk on 9 February, BelTA learned from the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The parties discussed practical steps to intensify political cooperation between the countries and enhance contacts at the highest and high levels, the preparation of joint bilateral events,” the press service noted. Special consideration was given to the topical issues of Belarusian-Vietnamese cooperation  in trade, economic, education and humanitarian affairs.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 24 January 1992. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Belarusian-Vietnamese diplomatic relations.

Belarus and Vietnam have been continuously developing a political dialogue. The states have exchanged visits at the highest and high levels. For example, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko paid official visits to Vietnam in 1997, 2008 and 2015. Belarus hosted Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong in August 1998 and President Nguyen Minh Triet in May 2010. President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Tran Dai Quang paid a state visit to Belarus in June 2017.

Belarus and Vietnam have been successfully cooperating in international organizations. In December 2018, Belarus supported Vietnam’s nomination to the UN Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) for 2019-2025 from the Asian regional group. In addition, Belarus and Vietnam traditionally support each other in international organizations on human rights issues.
