Belarus, Uzbekistan stepping up cooperation in education

MINSK, 9 June (BelTA) – Belarus and Uzbekistan are expanding cooperation in education, the Belarusian Education Ministry told BelTA.

Education Minister Andrei Ivanets met with Uzbek Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Olimjon Abdullaev and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Uzbekistan Rakhmatulla Nazarov. The meeting focused on training personnel for popular professions and developing vocational education. The operation of the Belarusian-Uzbek Institute of Applied and Technical Qualifications was also discussed.

“Belarusian education is highly valued in Uzbekistan. More than 35,000 foreign students study in Belarus, 10% of whom are citizens of Uzbekistan,” the ministry reported.

The Uzbek side emphasized that it is interested in developing interuniversity cooperation including the issuance of double diplomas, in expanding academic mobility of students and teachers, and implementing joint research and development projects.

The parties plan to discuss bilateral matters in more detail within the framework of the 10th conference of the education ministers of the SCO member states in Minsk on 16-17 June.
