Belarus-USA relations can be and should be normalized

MINSK, 7 December (BelTA) – Relations between Belarus and the United States of America can be and should be normalized, BelTA learned from former U.S. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Robert Barry in Minsk on 7 December.

“From my personal point of view the bilateral relations between Belarus and the USA have been developing gradually in the last two years. And I hope that the process will continue. It is the time when the relations can be and should be normalized,” said the former diplomat.

Speaking about political processes in the world, Robert Barry supposed that the Eurasian Economic Union and NATO are very likely to take a step back while the development of some processes will slow down. “The step back will be made in order to find one’s bearings in a new situation that is emerging, including after the new USA president is elected,” believes Robert Barry.

“This situation should give such countries as Belarus some new and great opportunities for advancing relations both with the West and the East,” said the former USA ambassador.

Robert Barry is in Minsk as a participant of the international conference Minsk Dialogue. The conference’s theme is 25 Years Without USSR: Where Do Post-Soviet Trajectories Lead? The event is expected to gather multiple experts and diplomats from ex-USSR countries as well as the European Union and the USA. Participants of the conference are expected to analyze the modern state of intrastate and regional transformations in the post-Soviet space and their significance for international cooperation and security in Eurasia. They will also try to predict future development scenarios.
