MINSK, 27 January (BelTA) - The Presidium of the Council of the Republic adopted a statement in connection with the resolution of the European Parliament, BelTA learned from the press service of the upper house of parliament.

"The Presidium of the Council of the Republic resolutely condemns and rejects the resolution of the European Parliament of 19 January 2023, which reflects the politically biased position of MEPs and contradicts the reality and common sense. The resolution is illegitimate and does not comply with the principles of international law," the statement said. “MEPs continue their futile attempts to invent their own politically motivated rules that are illegal and unacceptable for Belarus. Instead of looking for opportunities to restore peace in Ukraine, MEPs are further provoking an escalation of regional tensions.”

The statement by the European Parliament about the involvement of Belarus in the situation in Ukraine does not stand up to any criticism,” the Council of the Republic noted. "We consider the inclusion of the issue on Belarus in the resolution of the European Parliament as illegal pressure on our country and interference in its internal affairs. The Republic of Belarus is a sovereign and independent state that defends its own path of development while unconditionally respecting the rights of other states. Being in the heart of Europe, our country promotes peaceful coexistence of all members of the international community, de-escalation of conflicts, implements the principle of mutual support of states in the fight against the challenges of our time," the statement said.

"Thanks to the policy of the president of the Republic of Belarus, our country is progressively developing in all areas and has acquired the image of a security donor in the region by putting forward peace initiatives, in particular, on a global security dialogue," the Council of the Republic emphasized. “The Republic of Belarus stands for a peaceful settlement of the situation in Ukraine. It was on the initiative of the Belarusian head of state that Belarus hosted three rounds of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. We are ready to continue to take all necessary measures, including parliamentary diplomacy, to promote a political solution to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.”
