Belarus UN representative: We do not accept attempts to rewrite international rules unilaterally

MINSK, 28 May (BelTA) - Belarus does not accept attempts to rewrite international rules unilaterally, Belarus’ Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Aleksei Panferov said at UN Security Council meeting during an open debate on “Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-Centered Multilateral System,” BelTA has learned.

“Today, the multilateral system is undergoing an unprecedented stress test. Tragically, daily reports of new outbreaks of bloody confrontations whether in the Middle East, Africa or Europe – have become routine rather than exceptional. The principles of multilateralism in international relations are being completely ignored. Armed conflicts, political rivalry among the world’s major powers, information wars and the undisguised persecution of countries deemed undesirable are vivid proof of this,” Aleksei Panferov said.

He noted that key multilateral agreements in the field of maintaining international peace and security are deteriorating. Arms control and non-proliferation regimes are being undermined, the diplomat said, warning that all of this is bringing the world closer to a point where the nuclear threat is becoming increasingly visible.

“Several days ago, we witnessed the failure of attempts to adopt a final document at the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). Under the current military and political conditions, achieving the NPT’s key objective – general and complete disarmament – is a difficult, or rather entirely unrealistic task. However, we are convinced that it is necessary to persist in a gradual and consistent dialogue, provided that all states adhere to key principles: mutual respect and consideration of the interests of all parties, rejection of the use or threat of force, and ensuring equal and indivisible security,” Aleksei Panferov said.

Aleksei Panferov stressed that strict adherence to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law, rather than a so-called ‘rules-based order’ plays a special role in these efforts.

“Belarus is a member of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations and fully supports its activities. We welcome the establishment, at the initiative of this Group, of the International Day Against Unilateral Coercive Measures and the holding of the corresponding solemn meeting of the UN General Assembly last year. We continue to support international efforts aimed at eradicating unilateralism and coercive measures as instruments of international relations, as they have an undeniable negative impact on the entire system of international relations and undermine stability and sustainable development,” the diplomat said.

Belarus firmly adheres to the principles of sovereign equality of states, non-interference in internal affairs and the peaceful settlement of disputes. “Sanctions imposed outside the framework of the UN Charter must be eradicated as a phenomenon. We express solidarity with all countries that have become victims of such policies. We would especially emphasize the need for the immediate lifting of all restrictive measures and the end of the economic and financial blockade of Cuba,” Aleksei Panferov added.

He emphasized that Belarus contributes to strengthening peace, sustainable development and international cooperation not merely in words, but in practice, by actively promoting the resumption of broad international dialogue aimed at restoring confidence-building measures, security and cooperation across Eurasia on the basis of multipolarity and multilateralism. These efforts resulted in the joint Belarusian-Russian initiative to adopt, with the participation of a broad range of Eurasian countries, a fundamental strategic document: the Eurasian Charter of Diversity and Multipolarity in the 21st Century.

The Belarusian representative invited partners to join the initiative and support the charter. “Belarus opposes the policy of force and domination. We do not accept attempts to rewrite international rules unilaterally in the interests of only a selected group. This poses a direct threat to the multilateral system that the United Nations is obliged to protect. Belarus remains open to mutually beneficial and respectful cooperation with all states without exception,” Aleksei Panferov concluded.
