Belarus, Turkmenistan reaffirm importance of political dialogue

MINSK, 11 May (BelTA) - Belarus and Turkmenistan reaffirm the importance of further deepening the political dialogue, reads the joint statement signed by the presidents of the two countries in Minsk, BelTA has learned.

Alexander Lukashenko and Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov confirmed the importance of further deepening the political dialogue, expanding the legal framework of bilateral relations, holding regular consultations and maintaining interaction at various levels. The parties show a mutual interest to continue active development and strengthening of multifaceted cooperation based on the principles of strategic partnership, equality, mutual respect, trust and in the interests of each other.

The two leaders stressed the need to coordinate efforts on many topical issues in universal and regional organizations, of which Belarus and Turkmenistan are members. “The heads of state reaffirmed the importance of enhancing the role of the United Nations and its institutions in addressing global issues of sustainable development, strengthening the security and stability in the world,” reads the joint statement.

The parties noted the need to intensify bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the fight against extremism, international terrorism and drug trafficking on the basis of international treaties to which Belarus and Turkmenistan are signatories.

The heads of state stressed the importance of restoring peace in Afghanistan for the long-term stability and security, and sustainable development of the Central Asian region. The parties expressed their readiness to continue to support the peaceful reconstruction of Afghanistan, the document says.

The Presidents also reaffirmed the importance of strengthening trade and economic cooperation and adopting practical measures to increase the mutual trade. The parties show a big interest in cooperation and exchange of experience in such areas as energy, transportation, road construction, tourism, agriculture, textile industry. In addition, the leaders of Belarus and Turkmenistan stressed the importance of deepening cooperation in the transport and logistics sector and maximizing the use of the transit potential of the two countries.

In the presence of Alexander Lukashenko and Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov a number of documents was signed to boost ties between Belarus and Turkmenistan in many areas, including in culture, sport, cooperation between educational institutions of the two countries and media outlets. An intergovernmental agreement was signed to cancel VAT on the goods imported by the Belarusian-Turkmen trading house to the territory of the two countries.
