Belarus to submit draft resolution on combating trafficking in human organs to UN

MINSK, 19 May (BelTA) – Belarus will submit its draft of the resolution on combating trafficking in human organs to the United Nations, spokesman for the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dmitry Mironchik told journalists on 19 May, BelTA has learned.

The representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Vienna will host the 25th session of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice on 23-27 May. At the session Belarus will put forward the draft resolution on combating trafficking in human organs. The Belarusian delegation submitted its first resolution on this subject at the 23rd session of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention in 2014 which was adopted by the Commission by consensus, Dmitry Mironchik said. He added that back then the resolution was co-sponsored by Venezuela, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, El Salvador, the USA, and Sudan.

Dmitry Mironchik remarked that the adoption of the resolution in 2014 was an important political achievement of Belarus in the field of multilateral diplomacy, as it was for the first time that the fight against organ trafficking was included into the agenda of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. In his words, the 2016 resolution will help get a full understanding of the scope of this problem.

On the sidelines of the session in Vienna the Belarusian delegation together with the delegation of the Philippines and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime will hold the events dedicated to the protection of human trafficking victims.
