Belarus to present its anti-spice resolution to UN

MINSK, 27 August (BelTA) – Belarus plans to present its resolution on the fight against spice drugs to the United Nations Organization, head of the department on global policy and humanitarian cooperation of the main office for multilateral diplomacy at the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Vadim Pisarevich said during the roundtable, Belarus and the UN: 70 Years Together, that took place in the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus on 27 August, BelTA has learned.

“We are currently busy working out an initiative to combat the distribution of narcotics. In 1961 and 1971 the UN adopted conventions to prohibit concrete drugs. However, the modern chemistry has made a huge leap forward and today there are substances in production which are not considered as drugs but have the same effect on people,” said Vadim Pisarevich.

In his words, today’s major goal for international cooperation is to decide the fate for such narcotics, such psychotropic substances. “We are on this issue and believe that in March 2016 we will be ready to submit the corresponding draft resolution to determine the areas of cooperation in this area,” the head of the department said.

The roundtable in the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus was held to mark the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the United Nations Organization. Partaking in the event were representatives of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Justice Ministry, the Defense Ministry, the Interior Ministry, the Council of the Republic, the National Academy of Sciences and establishments of higher education.
