MINSK, 15 March (BelTA) – As part of the 61st session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna, Vice Chairperson of the commission, Belarus’ Permanent Representative to the international organizations in Vienna Alena Kupchyna attended a high-level event to mark the launch of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime document on strategic partnership and program activity in Eastern Europe, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The document defines the strategic framework of cooperation of the UN Office on Crime and Drugs with Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine in the following priority areas: combating transnational organized crime; a comprehensive and balanced approach in the fight against drugs; countermeasures to corruption; assistance to the development of legal systems. The total budget of the events envisaged in the document makes up $9 million.

Alena Kupchyna stressed in her speech the importance of the program document of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, which will promote the partnership and strengthen coordination in both the participating countries and the international level. In her words, the approach is at the basis of Belarus’ efforts to combat cross-border organized crime, illegal drug and human trafficking. A practical example of such partnership is Belarus’ initiatives to set up the Group of Friends United against Human Trafficking and adopt the UN Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons. Belarus’ permanent representative also stressed the importance of setting up an efficient mechanism for the implementation of the document to concentrate efforts and resources on the areas of priority interest for the participating states.
