Belarus to continue fighting illegal turnover of radioactive materials

MINSK, 13 June (BelTA) – Belarus intends to continue taking an active part in international cooperation aimed at fighting the illegal turnover of radioactive materials. The statement was made by Belarusian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Oleg Kravchenko during the international conference “Managing complexity: Addressing societal security challenges in the Baltic Sea region” in Sweden, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA.

During the discussion about nuclear security in the Baltic Sea region Oleg Kravchenko underlined Belarus’ contribution to the fight against the illegal turnover of radioactive materials. The official mentioned the constant attention Belarus pays to the protection of nuclear installations in its territory and confirmed the intention of the Belarusian side to continue contributing vigorously to international cooperation in this sphere.

The conference was organized by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs Margot Wallstrom, State Secretary of the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Annika Soder, high-ranking representatives of the ministries of foreign affairs of Denmark, Poland, Russia, Norway, and Estonia, representatives of the secretariats of the Council of the Baltic Sea States and the Nordic Council of Ministers took part in the conference. Officials and leading security experts from the Baltic Sea region discussed a large number of topical items on the regional agenda, including fight against terrorism, response to climate change, and enabling the uninterrupted operation of critical infrastructure.

While in Sweden on 11-13 June Oleg Kravchenko met with Speaker of the Swedish parliament Urban Ahlin and State Secretary of the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Annika Soder. A number of topical items on the bilateral and regional agendas were discussed.

Oleg Kravchenko met with Director General of the Council of the Baltic Sea States Secretariat Maira Mora. Prospects of Belarus’ practical cooperation with this regional organization in areas of mutual interest were discussed.
