Belarus to attend OSCE PA Winter Meeting in Vienna

Belarus to attend OSCE PA Winter Meeting in Vienna

MINSK, 19 February (BelTA) – Belarus’ parliamentary delegation led by Vice Chairman of the House of Representatives Boleslav Pirshtuk will attend the OSCE PA Silk Road Support Group meeting and the OSCE PA Winter Meeting in Vienna on 20-22 February, BelTA learned.

Boleslav Pirshtuk will inform the participants of the OSCE PA Silk Road Support Group meeting about the format and the program of the OSCE PA Silk Road Support Group conference due in Minsk on 29-30 April. The Belarusian MPs will also attend the presentation by the Austrian colleagues dedicated to the group and its activities.

Belarus’ representatives will take part in the meeting of the Standing Committee to discuss organizational and procedural matters, including amendments to the statutes and regulations of the organization.

The MPs will take part in the meetings of the General Committee on Political Affairs and Security, and the General Committee on Economic Affairs, Science, Technology and Environment. Boleslav Pirshtuk will be among the speakers of the latter committee to speak about Belarus’ digital economy promotion efforts. In addition, he will lay out the country's approaches to another resolution that Belarus plans to submit at the OSCE PA Summer Meeting in Luxembourg. The vice speaker said that the resolution will be about economy, innovations and technology because Belarus is interested in bringing the best European technology into its economy. “We will present our draft, see what our colleagues, on whose support we rely, think about it,” Boleslav Pirshtuk said.

During the meeting of the General Committee on Political Affairs and Security the MPs will again highlight Belarus’ commitment to peace and security, its willingness to continue to serve as a peaceful negotiation platform, a bridge between the East and the West.

A meeting of heads and members of the parliaments of the CSTO member states will be held on the sidelines of the OSCE PA meeting. According to Boleslav Pirshtuk, the meeting participants will coordinate actions and discuss the strategy for 2019. He added that the MPs of the CSTO member states demonstrate complete understanding on most issues on the agenda.

Boleslav Pirshtuk sees a positive trend in the development of cooperation with the OSCE PA. “The parliamentary delegation has become recognizable. This view is shared by colleagues, including the leadership of the assembly. In general, the image of Belarus has enhanced primarily due to the active position of the head of state,” the vice speaker said.

According to him, the goal of the parliament is to cultivate favorable environment at such venues as the OSCE PA for promoting economic cooperation, raising investment and bolstering political ties. The forthcoming OSCE PA Silk Road Support Group Conference will contribute to the image as well. Minsk intends to demonstrate the country's potential, show openness to dialogue and commitment to European values. Belarus, first of all, is interested in innovations and technologies to promote economic growth, Boleslav Pirshtuk added.

Belarus’ efforts in the OSCE PA and the international arena do not go unnoticed. Minsk hosts a large number of important events, including, for example, the Munich Security Conference. The resolutions prepared by the country (on combating drugs, trafficking in persons, digital economy) have been supported by the OSCE partners. Inter-parliamentary contacts have been vibrant too. Boleslav Pirshtuk noted that there were about 35-37 friendship groups when the National Assembly of the sixth convocation went operational. Today it has about 80 friendship groups. The number of visits by foreign parliamentary delegations has doubled, which indicates to a growing interest in Belarus.
