Belarus takes part in meeting to discuss implementation of Basel Convention

MINSK, 9 December (BelTA) – A representative of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Environmental Protection of Belarus took part in a round table to discuss the transboundary movements of electrical and electronic waste and used electrical and electronic equipment under the Basel Convention, BelTA learned from the press service of the ministry.

The event was organized by the Basel Convention Regional Center in Bratislava, Slovakia, and the UNITAR, Sustainable Cycles (SCYCLE) program with the support of the Secretariat of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal.

The event reviewed the guidelines on the control of transboundary movements of electrical and electronic waste and used electrical and electronic equipment in accordance with the provisions of the Basel Convention and the principles of environmentally friendly management developed by the UNITAR/SCYCLE program, as well as export, import and control over the transboundary movement of electrical and electronic waste.

Taking part in the round table was Yekaterina Chichko, Consultant of the Waste Management Regulation Department of the Central Office for Waste Management Regulation, Biological and Landscape Diversity of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection. She presented an overview of legislation regulating control over transboundary movements of hazardous waste in Belarus.

The participants of the round table praised Belarus’ efforts to implement the provisions of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal, in particular the high level of work to prevent illegal movements of hazardous wastes.
