Belarus, Syria discuss prospects of joint infrastructure projects

MINSK, 5 April (BelTA) – The prospects of joint infrastructure projects were discussed at a meeting between Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko and Syrian Minister of Presidential Affairs Mansour Azzam on 5 April, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian leader.

The head of state warmly welcomed the Syrian guest: “It is good that you have come to Belarus. It is very useful for us to learn from you what the situation in the country is and how the Syrian people and the president of Syria live.”

Mansour Azzam stressed for his part that it is an honor for him to meet with Alexander Lukashenko. “This is a testimony to the warm relations that exist between the presidents of the two countries. I would like to give you a letter from Bashar al-Assad,” the minister said. He also spoke about the current situation in Syria and those huge losses, human losses in the first place, of the Syrian people. About 70% of infrastructure has been destroyed in the country, and the current task is to restore it.

Special attention during the talks was focused on the prospects for Syrian peaceful development, including Belarus’ participation in economic, infrastructure projects in Syria. Syria can find useful the Belarusian experience in building socially significant facilities, schools, hospitals, and roads.

The Belarusian president expressed readiness to help the Syrian people in peaceful construction and implementation of joint economic and infrastructure projects. The minister stressed that Syria invites Belarus, which has always supported the Syrian people, to take part in the restoration of the country.

The parties also talked over humanitarian projects, including recuperation of Syrian children in Belarus, and the education of Syrian youth in Belarusian universities.
