Belarus supports development of Sustainable Development Goals monitoring indicators

MINSK, 11 March (BelTA) – Belarus supports the development of indicators for monitoring the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, BelTA learned from representatives of the National Statistics Committee of Belarus.

The Committee’s Chairwoman Inna Medvedeva took part in the 47th session of the Statistical Commission of the United Nations Organization. The event took place in New York, USA on 8-11 March. The agenda included the framework for indicators for monitoring the goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the presentation of these data. Inna Medvedeva expressed Belarus’ view on the matter by saying that while on the whole Belarus is in favor of continued operation of the group on sustainable development goal indicators, the country would like the group to abstain from including the indicators, on which the international community does not completely agree.

The session also focused on implementing the program on transforming official statistics, improving the collection, preparation, and dissemination of national accounting statistics, environmental-economic accounting statistics, information and communication technology statistics, and refugee statistics.

The head of the National Statistics Committee of Belarus met with heads of the statistics services of individual countries and statistics services of interstate associations. Interaction and prospects of future cooperation with the Eurostat were discussed among other things. An agreement was reached for Belarus to host a regular session of the statistics council of the Belarusian and Russian state statistics agencies this year. Meetings with the heads of the statistics agencies of Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan were held as well as meetings with representatives of the Eurasian Economic Commission and the CIS Interstate Statistics Committee.
