Belarus shares experience in strengthening demographic security with UN member states

MINSK, 5 April (BelTA) – Belarusian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Valentin Rybakov attended the 50th session of the Commission on Population and Development at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 4 April. The diplomat presented Belarus’ experience in strengthening demographic security, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The priority theme of the session that is running from 3 to 7 April is “Changing population age structures and sustainable development”. Valentin Rybakov informed the participants about the measures taken in Belarus to overcome the population decline and raise the birth rate. The Belarusian diplomat noted that the Belarusian government takes measures for social integration of older persons. The measures include amendments to the labor legislation to prohibit discrimination on grounds of age, and implementation of various educational, health, cultural and sports programs for older people.

“Valentin Rybakov emphasized that family support is one of the mechanisms to keep the age balance of the population and ensure demographic security of the country. In this regard, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Belarus called for promoting family values, creating favorable and balanced conditions for motherhood, and empowering women to participate in the social, economic, and political life of the country,” the press service said.

The Belarusian diplomat emphasized the positive results of the national social policy in Belarus. He noted that life expectancy has increased in recent years, and the population decline rate has been reduced to a minimum. Valentin Rybakov pointed out that increase in birth rate and decrease in death rate create conditions for overcoming the depopulation trend and promoting natural population growth.
