Belarus seeks WB’s participation in innovation development program for 2021-2025

MINSK, 17 July (BelTA) – Belarus is showing interest in the participation of the World Bank experts in the development of the state innovation development program for 2021-2025. The matter was discussed during a video conference between Chairman of the State Committee on Science and Technology of Belarus Aleksandr Shumilin and the World Bank experts, BelTA has learned.

“The State Committee on Science and Technology together with the UN Economic Commission for Europe has prepared two reviews on Belarus' innovative development. The recommendations of these reviews were used in the development and implementation of the state innovation development program for 2016-2020. It is important for Belarus that the World Bank participates in the development and implementation of the state innovation development program for 2021-2025, both in the development of system proposals for accelerated innovative development of the country and in the implementation of specific innovation projects,” said Aleksandr Shumilin.

The chairman of the committee added that the future program would include 72 projects to launch new productions that are of crucial importance for the innovative development of the country. Nineteen of them are based on technological waves 5-6, and 23 more - on domestic developments.

The parties discussed the development and improvement of support mechanisms for the implementation of innovative projects, including in information and communication technologies, healthcare and pharmacy, biotechnology, mechanical engineering and instrument-making, nanomaterials.

The World Bank was founded in 1944. The organization, headquartered in Washington, D.C., has more than 120 representative offices around the world, employing more than 10,000 people. Belarus became a member of the World Bank in 1992. During the whole period of membership the country has been provided with $2.1 billion of loans. In May 2020, the World Bank approved a financial support package of €90 million for the country’s healthcare project.
