Belarus seeks closer cooperation with Russia in environmental security

MINSK, 29 November (BelTA) - Belarus intends to develop cooperation with Russia in the field of environmental security, Belarus’ First Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Iya Malkina said at the expert and media forum to discuss the topical issues of environmental security in the Union State and cooperation between Belarus and Russia in environmental matters, BelTA has learned.

“We would like to forge closer contacts with Russia in the field of environmental security. Our cooperation holds great prospects. There are many joint issues that need solving.

We have great respect for the fact that Russia declared the year 2017 the Year of Environment. We have been watching the events that you organize and the approaches you apply. In ensuring environmental safety our countries are going one and the same way. In some areas we already cooperate very actively,” Iya Malkina noted.

As an example, the deputy minister described the cooperation between the hydro-meteorological services of Russia and Belarus. “Roshydromet and Belhydromet hold a lot of joint activities, exchange experience and information. I would like to thank Roshydromet for methodological and scientific support to our service, and express my satisfaction with this cooperation,” she added. In addition, the Union State program on the development of hydro-meteorological security system in the Union State for 2017-2020 is currently underway.

Iya Malkina also stressed that waste management is high on the agenda for both Belarus and Russia. “Dealing with landfills is our number one priority. We would like to work together with Russia in this direction, including in changing approaches to waste classification and other important issues,” she said.

The expert and media seminar is aimed at analyzing and discussing the current cooperation between Belarus and Russia in environmental protection, ecological education, the exchange of experience in climate change. Taking part in the seminar are MPs of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, representatives of the Union State Permanent Committee, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, experts in ecology and nature protection. The event is organized by the Union State Permanent Committee and the National Press Center of Belarus under the auspices of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
