Belarus seeks closer cooperation with Council of Europe

MINSK, 11 April (BelTA) – Belarus is interested in close cooperation with the Council of Europe, Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said after his meeting with his Bulgarian counterpart Daniel Mitov on 11 April, BelTA has learned.

The Council of Europe is one of Europe’s most respected organizations with a considerable expert potential in a number of different areas. Bulgaria is currently presiding in the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. The visit of the Bulgarian Minister of Foreign Affairs to Belarus demonstrates the attention the Council of Europe attaches to cooperation with Belarus and the country's mutual interest in cooperation with the Council of Europe, the Belarusian minister said.

The visit of the Chairman of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe to Belarus is timely and important. We hope that it will add a new impetus to the development of our cooperation with the Council of Europe,” said Vladimir Makei.

In his words, the meeting highlighted a lot of issues, including the ones most vulnerable for the Council of Europe and Belarus, i.e. capital punishment and cooperation in the field of human rights. Vladimir Makei also emphasized positive dynamics in the relations between Belarus and the Council of Europe. “Our joint task is to keep this momentum,” he stressed.
