Belarus-Russia Union State Cabinet to approve Earth remote sensing program concept

MINSK, 28 August (BelTA) – Plans have been made to approve the concept of the Union State program on the development, modernization, and harmonization of regulatory, organizational, methodological, hardware, and software support for the purposeful application of Belarusian and Russian systems for the remote sensing of Earth during the next session of the Council of Ministers of the Union State of Belarus and Russia. The information was released by Sergei Zolotoi, Director of the enterprise Geoinformation Systems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, chief designer of the Belarusian space system for the remote sensing of Earth, at a press conference on 28 August, BelTA has learned.

The official said: “According to the latest reports, the approval process in the Russian Finance Ministry is virtually over. The adoption of the program’s concept is supposed to be put on agenda of the next session of the Union State Council of Ministers.”

Belarus and Russia have already carried out five Union State programs on space exploration intended to create new materials, information technologies, ground infrastructure, and instruments. “Space research is a priority for many countries, including Belarus. Personnel training is an important matter in addition to the development of equipment and technologies. We are primarily talking about such universities as the Belarusian State University, the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics, and the Belarusian National Technical University. These universities are more tightly connected to various aspects of space technologies than the rest. We should encourage young Belarusians to pursue careers in this field,” noted Piotr Vityaz, Chief of Staff of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
